What is Vitreoretinal Surgery?

Vitreoretinal surgery refers to set of procedure that is used to treat eye problems involving macula, retina, and vitreous fluid. The ocular problems that are treated by vitreoretinal surgery include macular hole, retinal detachment, epiretinal membrane and various complications related to diabetic retinopathy.

Some of the postoperative questions related to vitreoretinal surgery are:

Will I experience pain during the surgery?
Some discomfort is normal and expected after the procedure. You will be required to use pain medications for the first few days. Your doctor will put you on Aspirin, Tylenol, or Advil for pain relief.

How much drainage is expected after the surgery?
You can expect moderate amount of drainage after the procedure. The drainage decreases gradually. You will be instructed to clean the lid with a clean washcloth. You need to cleanse based on your doctor’s instructions.

After the surgery is complete, do I need to wear an eye patch?
Once the drainage has stopped, probably in about three to four days, you need not wear an eye patch. An eye patch can, however, keep you comfortable while sleeping or in a dusty/windy environment.

Will I need to make use of eye drops after the procedure?
Before leaving from the hospital, you will be given different types of eye drops and ointment with direction of usage. Wearing sunglasses may help. These medications are to expedite healing and keep infections at bay.

When will I begin to notice improvement in my vision?
Your vision will gradually improve. You will regain your best vision in a span of 6 months. You may notice double vision or floaters after the procedure. These will usually decrease with time. Patching of eye is recommended to treat double vision for short period of time.

Will there be swelling after the surgery?
There is some swelling after the procedure but it gradually decreases in about a week. You will be advised to use cool compresses for 5-10 minutes several times during the day to alleviate swelling and feel comfortable.
