Strasbismus:

Commonly known as squint or ‘teer’, this medical condition affects 2-5% of all children. Imbalance of the muscular forces is considered responsibile for this condition. The exact cause of the development of squint in children is not clear.

There is a higher chance of developing squint if the patient has a family history of the same. Different causes of development of squint in children could be mental retardation, delayed development, or other systemic abnormalities.

Treatment of strasbismus depends on the type of deviation.

The ophthalmologist performs a thorough examination to determine the type of squint. Many a times spectacles and exercise are used to treat the condition. Those children who suffer from manifest squint might not benefit from spectacles and hence require surgery.

Many people think that treating squint in early stages is not recommended but it is imperative to know that every type of squint needs thorough evaluation and treatment in time.

Retinopathy of Prematurity:

ROP is a that generally occurs in premature babies. This condition causes abnormal blood vessels to grow in the retina that causes it to detach from the back of the eye leading to blindness. This condition is also known as Terry Syndrome.

ROP has no signs or symptoms. The only way to detect is through a eye examination.

Treatment for ROP:

Most commonly, ROP is treated with laser surgery in which small beams of laser are used to scar the peripheral retina. The procedure takes about 30 to 45 minutes for each eye. Second treatment option is cryotherapy. During this procedure, freezing temperatures are used to scar the peripheral retina to stop the growth of abnormal blood vessels. Lately, cryotherapy has been replaced by laser treatment. For more advanced cases of ROP, scleral buckling and vitrectomy can be considered.
