Clinical Terms You May Come Across as a General Eye Examination is Being Done

Understanding certain clinical terms before obtaining eye treatment in India isn’t generally essential for awareness, but helps a patient understand what is being performed to address and eliminate a particular eye condition. Essential terms include;

  • Ophthalmoscopy
Also known as funduscopy, Ophthalmoscopy is a test for examining the fundus “back portion” of the eye. The front part of the eye is easily examined with the slip lamp examination and a slip lamp is at times used for detailed evaluation of the macula and the optic disc.
  • Vision Testing
This is the commonest form of eye examination performed at every eye clinic or hospital. It involves making a person read standard sized letters at a given distance and vision is recorded as a fraction such as 5/5 or 7/7. With the numbers, the upper digit indicates the distance at which a person has been able to read the letter, whereas the lower one indicates the normal distance at which a person is expected to read the letter.
  • Dilatation
This is one of the most performed eye procedures at the best eye hospital in India. The pupil of the eye dilates depending on the light exposed to the eye. As the ophthalmologist examines the eye, one has to dilate the pupils so as to permit more light into the eye, which helps the doctor get a clear observation of the eye.
  • Gonioscopy
This is the test for examining the angle of the eye. Studying the eye angle helps the doctor ascertain the actual cause of glaucoma. A gonioscope or a slit lamp is used.
  • Refraction
This is a vital test mostly used by an optometrist or an ophthalmologist and it is usually done in the normal state. Whereas a specialized instrument is used in adults, eye drops are used in children.
  • Slit Lamp examination
This is an instrument with an inbuilt microscope and a bright illumination system. The arrangement of the light and a microscope helps the doctor get a thorough examination of the eye under magnification.
  • Applanation Tonometry
This procedure involves a small prism is mounted on a slit lamp to contact the eyeball and measure the pressure. This procedure is more accurate and commonly used.
  • Tonometry (eye pressure check)
This is a procedure for measuring the pressure within the eye. The normal pressure of the eye falls in a range, but there isn’t a definite number. Increased pressure in the eye can result in different eye conditions such as glaucoma.
  • Schiotz tonometry
In this procedure, metallic device is placed on the eyeball and the deflections of the needle on the scale are used as a guide to measure the eye pressure.
  • Amsler grid testing
Depending on the prevailing symptoms, this test is performed and it involves looking at a chart that has a grid drawn with a central dot. This test helps to evaluate the function of the central 20 degrees of the retina. You will be asked to look at the central dot and various questions will be raised.
  • Tonopen
This specialized electronic device is used for specific eye conditions and a drop of anesthetic is placed on the eye before the tests.
