Paediatric Eye Care at Rana Hospital

Dr. Brijinder Singh Rana brings extensive expertise in pediatric ophthalmology, offering advanced care for children with complex eye conditions such as Strabismus (Squint) and Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP).

Strabismus (Squint / ‘Teer’):
Strabismus is a common condition that affects around 2–5% of children, caused by an imbalance in the eye muscles. Though the exact cause may not always be clear, risk factors include family history, developmental delays, or systemic abnormalities.

  • Diagnosis: A detailed examination helps determine the type of squint.

  • Treatment: In mild cases, spectacles and eye exercises may be effective. However, in children with significant or manifest squint, surgery is often required to restore proper alignment.

  • Early Intervention: Contrary to common belief, strabismus should not be ignored in the early stages. Timely treatment is critical to prevent long-term vision complications and to improve cosmetic appearance and binocular vision.

Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP):
ROP is a potentially sight-threatening condition that occurs in premature babies. It involves the abnormal growth of retinal blood vessels, which may lead to retinal detachment and blindness if untreated. Often called Terry Syndrome, this condition has no visible symptoms and can only be detected through an eye examination.

  • Treatment Options:

    • Laser Therapy: The most common treatment, where precise laser beams scar the peripheral retina to stop abnormal vessel growth.

    • Cryotherapy: An older method using freezing techniques, now mostly replaced by laser.

    • Advanced Surgical Care: In severe cases, procedures like scleral buckling or vitrectomy may be considered.
