Modern Cataract Surgery
Cataract is the clouding of the eye’s natural lens, leading to blurred or dim vision. Modern cataract surgery is a safe, microscopic procedure performed under local or topical anesthesia. Using phacoemulsification, the cloudy lens is broken into tiny pieces and removed through a very small incision. A new intraocular lens (IOL) is then implanted to restore clear vision. For foldable lenses, only a 2.8–3.0 mm incision is required, while non-foldable lenses may need a slightly larger incision of about 5 mm. Both types of incisions are self-healing and do not require stitches.
Whether you need glasses after surgery depends on the type of IOL chosen. Advanced lenses can reduce or even eliminate the need for glasses, including reading glasses, making thick spectacles rarely necessary. While cataracts are most common in people above 60, they can occasionally occur in younger patients.
Benefits of modern cataract surgery include
- No stitches or injections required
- No hospitalization – patients go home within 30 minutes
- Quick recovery and improved vision
- Freedom to choose advanced lenses for reduced dependency on glasses
Factors in Choosing the Right IOL
When selecting an intraocular lens (IOL) after cataract surgery, several personal factors need to be considered, such as your profession, lifestyle, hobbies, night vision needs, presence of astigmatism, willingness to wear glasses, and budget. Monofocal IOLs are the simplest and most affordable option, giving clear distance vision but requiring reading glasses. New-generation premium IOLs—such as multifocal, accommodative, toric, and aspheric lenses—can greatly reduce dependence on glasses, offering sharper vision and better quality of life, though they are more costly and may have certain limitations. Advances like laser cataract surgery and corneal refractive procedures (LASIK, PRK, CK) can further enhance outcomes, ensuring clearer vision and greater independence from spectacles. At Rana Hospital, patients receive expert guidance in choosing the most suitable IOL, tailored to their lifestyle, vision needs, and budget.
